Mouth of the Month

November 2016 Mangum Dental Mouth-of-the-Month

The top picture is a basketball player who injured his tooth during a basketball game. At Mangum Dental, we frequently treat young patients who have injured their teeth and mouth during sports. We recommend custom mouth guards for athletics and provide them to our regular patients at no cost. Ask us about our custom mouth guards.

The bottom three frames tell a story from the 2013 NCAA Basketball Tournament. Fourteenth seated Harvard won their first game against the third seat New Mexico. Their Cinderella story ended when they met Arizona in the second round. Harvard lost the game and guard Siyani Chambers lost part of his tooth.

What a radiant smile! The bottom two pictures are before short-term orthodontic treatment with clear brackets and a white wire. This treatment is often complete start to finish in just 6 months. The results were amazing.

This mouth-of-the-month shows the benefit of orthodontics. Although this is not work accomplished at Mangum Dental, is is a wonderful illustration of what we can do working with orthodontists in our community. This is actually Dr. Mangum’s before and after orthodontic pictures. Observe the severe overjet (often referred to as overbite or “buck” teeth).

Look at the two front teeth on this patient. His primary concern were the color and chipping of his front teeth. Two porcelain veneers were fabricated after minor modification of the front teeth. These porcelain veneers made all the difference for this patient.

This unique dental bridge received an artistic design. At Mangum Dental we strive to make our crowns and bridges look and feel like natural teeth. However, this patient was the exception. This patient has an interest in trains and his nephew is a dental lab technician who customized this bridge for him. The dental work was done by Dr. Jim Ransdell, a dentist at Mangum Dental since 2014.

May 2016 Mangum Dental’s Mouth-of-the-Month

This is a picture of a root canal performed by Dr. Jim Ransdell. I root canal is necessary when the nerve or blood supply inside the tooth dies or becomes sick. This tooth belongs to a young man who had a deep cavity that spread to the the center of the tooth where the nerve lives. Dr. Ransdell was able to get the patient out of pain. Remember to brush, floss and see the dentist regularly to keep your dentistry simple 🙂

A new smile!

This wonderful patient did not like the position of her teeth.  We applied short-term orthodontics to straighten and reposition her teeth.  This treatment usually takes 6 month to a year.

Failing Implants

This patient came to Mangum Dental with a concern about her dental implants placed on the lower right jaw.  Upon examination we saw that two implants supporting four teeth were failing.  The only option was to remove the implants. This patient was referred to Dr. Jason Campbell at to have the implants removed, the jawbone widened, and new implants placed.  After the surgery and the healing we placed three teeth on three implants.  This procedure took about a year to complete and the outcome was successful.
